ELLSWORTH — Three hundred four days after they met in a boys basketball regional semifinal contest in March, Ellsworth and Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s squared off in a rematch on Friday.

Though the game and final score was closer this time, the result was the same as St. Mary’s beat the Lancers 71-63.

Ellsworth, which hadn’t lost a game since that 76-59 loss to the Eagles ended its season, had the upper hand for the first half thanks to an 8-0 start that led to a 21-14 first quarter lead. The Lancers were in front 37-33 at the half, but St. Mary’s claimed a 57-54 edge after the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter Ellsworth tried to stay in the game, but both Jamal Cebulski and Brayden Steenwyk fouled out in the first part of the final quarter and the Lancers couldn’t overcome those losses.

Kelan Pletcher had 27 points, four rebounds and four steals for Ellsworth, while Jacob Jenuwine had 13 points. Other key contributors included Patrick Puroll with six rebounds, Cebulski with nine points and five assists, and Steenwyk with five assists.
