Mancelona’s McClure wins cross country regional title

EAST JORDAN — Mancelona senior runner Tyler McClure captured the Division 3 regional championship on Saturday, running a personal best time of 16:24 to win the crown and earn a spot in Saturday’s state finals.

McClure was one of four boys and girls runners from area schools who qualified for the state meet. Elk Rapids’ Charlie Ward and Lachlan Beebe, as well as Sarah Zamaitas also earned their chance to run at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn — home of the finals.

Ward came in 11th in 17:09, while Beebe was 13th in 17:15. Zamaitas was 17th among the girls in 21:12.

Traverse City St. Francis was the boys and girls regional champions. The St. Francis boys scored 43 points to outdistance Harbor Springs (65) and Charlevoix (71). Elk Rapids was fifth with 110, Mancelona was sixth with 158 and Kalkaska was eighth with 219.
