Moller resigns as Elk Rapids head football coach

ELK RAPIDS — In late May Elk Rapids varsity football head coach Tony Moller was buzzing with excitement, looking past the Covid season of 2020 and putting football plans in motion to get the Elks ready to compete this year.

He had the staff he wanted in place, the off-season lifting programs were going well, and the numbers were looking good for varsity and JV football. The ER Fieldhouse, salvaged from a couple of nearly demolished old buildings on school grounds had been retooled and remodeled and were becoming the nerve center for Elk Rapids football. Moller planned on showing off the Fieldhouse to the public at the annual Orange and Black Scrimmage, held after the first week of practice in August. This was all in late May, and in mid-July Moller resigned as the Elks’ head football coach, ending a run of 15 years coaching in the Elk Rapids football program.

The resignation caught the local football community by surprise. There was no health issue involved, no scandal, nor was there a better job offer. Moller had to resign from coaching because he cannot find employees for his business.
