No plans to hold Winterfest

KALKASKA — One of the most popular, and furriest, Kalkaska winter events will not be held in 2022. The Kalkaska Winterfest, an event held most years since 1965, was billed as the largest sprint sled dog race in Michigan.

Attracting competitors from around the United States and even internationally, the canine centered activities also included dog weight pulls, fun run, craft and vendor show, silent auction, concessions, pancake breakfast, and more at the Kalkaska County Fairgrounds, Civic Center and on local trails.

The event, usually held during the month of February, has been canceled several times due to unstable snow conditions, including inadequate base layer coverage, too much ice or during some years, no snow at all.

“There are no plans for a 2022 Kalkaska Winterfest,” said Winterfest board member Shirley Hill. Hill, who is usually in charge of the craft show, silent auction and vendor spaces, commented that the board had not held a meeting or Winterfest event in 2021.
