Putts for Good Sam Ice Bowl to help local organization

ELLSWORTH — On Tuesday local disc golf enthusiasts got their first chance at competing in a league that will help players keep active during the heart of winter and also aid Good Samaritan Family Services in Ellsworth.

The Putts for Good Sam Ice Bowl is a weekly disc golf league that started on Tuesday and is held every Tuesday until March 15 at the Gold Nugget Bar & Grill in Ellsworth from 6-8:30 p.m. A $20 initial buy-in gets players a custom putting league Ice Bowl stamped disc that is used in the putting rounds, and $8 per week, per player is the cost after that. The funds for the initial buy in go toward the cost of a disc ($12), overhead costs ($2), with $5 going toward Good Samaritan Family Services and $1 toward Ellsworth’s first disc golf course.

The course is lighted and consists of a six-hole putting course, which will be played in groups of two or three. The competition will be three-plus rounds, with the two best rounds kept for a total score. Each player needs and will use three putters, including their Ice Bowl disc, and throws three putts on each hole. Points are awarded on the basis of one point awarded for each hole played (so they can use UDisc for scoring); for holes 1-5, one point for each putt made or five points if you make all three, for a total of six points per hole possible. The sixth hole will be a Marksman basket worth double points — two points/putt made or 10 points if you make all three for 11 total points available. Forty-one total points are available per round for a perfect score, 82 possible for the 'best of 2' rounds. The top three scores each week win prizes. There also will be an optional $5 buy-in for cash payouts each week, and $5 per extra round, if time allows.
