Students, parents react to changes in school practices
REGION — With the first few days of a new school year under their belts, public school district students and parents from both Antrim and Kalkaska County offered their thoughts recently on changes implemented due to the threat of COVID-19, with some offering high praise for the effort made to provide students with a safe learning environment, and others critical of new policies in place.
Although many students and parents have opted for virtual learning programs at home, at least for now, most students returned to school buildings between Aug. 31 and Sept. 8, with school administrators reporting an average return of 80 percent of the school districts' student bodies.
While younger children attending schools in person appeared to be adapting well to the changes, such as the need for mandatory masks and social distancing in all areas, for the most part, older students in middle school and high school weren't as positive.
