Szymchack, Norkowski lead Warriors at Mancelona meet

MANCELONA — Forest Area’s McKenzie Szymchack accounted for four firsts and Emily Norkowski added three more to highlight the Mancelona Open on Wednesday, April 10.

The Warriors’ dynamic duo shared one of those firsts as part of the winning 4x100 relay team. Along with Mia Cunningham and Lauren Lange, the Warriors recorded a time of 58.85. Szymchack also ran a leg of the winning 4x200 relay, joining McKenzie Thompson, Lange and Rory Richards for a time of 2:02.48. Szymchack also was first in the 100 (14.55) and the long jump (13-1.5).

Norkowski picked up two individual firsts in the 300 hurdles (54.18) and the high jump (4-0).

The host Ironmen were the team winners on the boys and girls sides. Mancelona’s boys scored 181 points, followed by Johannesburg-Lewiston with 104. Forest Area’s boys scored two points and were fifth. Mancelona’s girls edged Joburg 87-85 for first. Forest Area, led by Szymchack and Norkowski, scored 53 points and was fourth.
