KALKASKA — Despite the rainy weather, downtown Kalkaska was a hive of activity Tuesday, June 29. The official kick-off event of the Kalkaska County Library summer reading program, the first Downtown Kalkaska Stroll, Kalkaska Farmer’s Market, food trucks, music, magician, juggler, store sales, face painting, tarot readings and even a community drumming circle brought laughter, excitement and activity to Railroad Square and the surrounding blocks.

The KCL summer reading program featured Magician Cameron Zvara for two shows that wowed the crowd. The first show at 1 p.m. brought over 200 children and adults to the Railroad Square gazebo. Zvara’s 3 p.m. show packed the lower level of the library. The summer reading program will host events every Tuesday until Aug. 3 with dinosaur games, Legos and even a visit from the G.T. Butterfly House and Bug Zoo. Visit the Cedar Street library in person or view their website: kalkaskalibrary.org for more information.

The Kalkaska Farmer’s Market had another successful afternoon with nearly 20 vendors present selling an array of items such as baked goods, vegetables, fruit, plants, eggs, honey, meat, jewelry, household decorations, syrup, fish, seasonings and sauces, textiles, crafts and freeze-dried snacks like Milk Duds and Skittles. The market is held every Tuesday from 2- 6 p.m. through Sept. 28. Senior Project Fresh coupons are now accepted at all vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables.
