Family Fun Ski at GRNA

Free Family Fun Ski days will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. each Sunday from now through Feb. 11 at the Grass River Natural Area. All are invited to enjoy a warm fire, hot cocoa and free cross-country skiing on the GRNA’s tracked trails. Rental equipment is available by donation at the center and families can sign up for an instructor to guide them through the trails. 42nd annual White Pine Stampede

Saturday, January 6, 2018 - 9:00am to 3:00pm

Hundreds compete in Michigan’s longest and oldest point-to-point cross-country ski race, scheduled this year for Saturday, Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The annual event stretches over the hills and through the woods to Shanty Creek Resorts while raising funds for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. After racing, participants and volunteers gather for a post-race gala sponsored by Shorts Brewing Company in the Lakeview Hotel Grand Ballroom at Shanty’s Summit Village. Race distances are 10K and 20K (the 50K has been cancelled this year).

Munson Hospice Support Group – Kalkaska

Swiss steak dinner fundraiser

On the last Sunday of each month, the Bellaire Masonic Lodge hosts a fundraising dinner. This month’s dinner will be held Sunday, Jan. 28, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The meal includes: Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, coleslaw, dinner rolls, hot/cold drinks and dessert. The price is $10. Eat in or take out. Proceeds go to support projects in the community. Box Sled Derby and Sno-Fun Day

The annual Carly’s Hill Cardboard Box Sled Derby and Sno-Fun Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Springfield Township Park & Recreation Area in southern Kalkaska County. No pre-registration is required. All are welcome to show up with their cardboard sled and enter the day of the event.
The day includes food, refreshments, kids’ games, a safety helmet fitting and door prizes, all of which are free of charge to those attending. Donations, however, are welcome.

Winter Owl Prowl

The Grass River Natural Area will host a Winter Owl Prowl at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 to learn more about the owls’ calls and habits and take a moonlit hike in the woods. Al-Anon Meeting

Al-Anon meets at noon every Tuesday at the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church, 105 Bridge St. in the upstairs library (use the side door). The group’s Tuesday meetings are held during the months of May through December. This is a support group for family and friends whose lives are affected by the alcohol or substance abuse of loved ones.

AMVETS fish fry

The Elk Rapids AMVETS Post 114 will hold a fish fry from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at the post home, 410 Bridge St. in Elk Rapids. Cod, whitefish or a combo are offered and all meals include fries and coleslaw (or baked potato upon request). The public is welcome and all proceeds go to support local veterans.

ALATEEN meetings in Kalkaska

ALATEEN is now holding meetings at 8 p.m. every Tuesday at the Kalkaska Senior Center, 303 Coral St. Alateen is a support group for those ages 12-18 whose lives have been affected by the alcohol or substance abuse of a loved one. There are three separate meetings held at the same time: AL-ANON, ALATEEN and AA. All are welcome to attend the meeting of their choice.

‘The Entertainment Trap’

The Central Lake Adventist Church will host emergency room physician Dr. Bevin Clayton for a special presentation at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15. Dr. Clayton will discuss “The Entertainment Trap – the effect of media on the brain and how much is too much?” He will also talk about healthier snack options for family night. There is no charge for the event and free food samples will be available. The church is located at 2424 Green St. in Central Lake.
