ER Women to host speaker

The Elk Rapids Women will present “Navigating Personal Change” with guest speaker Anne Bonney on Thursday, March 1, from 6-8 p.m. at McGee’s 72, 4341 M-72 East in Williamsburg. The Slush Cup

As one of Michigan’s most popular winter events for more than 40 years, the 2018 Slush Cup is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at Shanty Creek Resorts. Watch the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat as skiers and riders attempt to cross an icy 40-foot pond. Some take it to another level with crazy costumes. Other activities will include a frozen fish toss, snow shovel racing and a seal slide.

‘Art in Ice – Sweet & Nice’

The American Culinary Federation of Northwest Michigan has partnered with Shanty Creek Resorts and the Bellaire Chamber of Commerce to bring “Art in Ice” to the streets of downtown Bellaire, from 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 2.
All are invited to stop by and watch 3,000 pounds of ice transformed into community-supported ice sculptures, all carved by local culinary artists. Additionally, a Sweet Treats Bake Off is planned.

Winter Yoga

Winter Carnival - YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camp

‘Spay-Ghetti Dinner’

The Alden Bar and Grill will host this year’s 8th Annual “Spay-Ghetti Dinner” from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18. The event is a fundraiser to support pet spaying and neutering to reduce the euthanasia of homeless animals in local shelters. All proceeds will go to benefit AC PAW’s and NorthWoods Animal Coalition (NAC)’s spay and neuter rescue efforts.

Benefit fundraiser for Mathew Grockau

A benefit spaghetti dinner/auction for Mathew Grockau will be held Saturday, Feb. 17 from 5-8 p.m.  in the Pelican Room, located at 2102 NE Torch Lake Drive, just south of Old State Road in Central Lake. A donation of $10 (or $30 for a family) is requested for the dinner.
Grockau, of Central Lake, was rushed to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City on Jan. 20 following an accident that resulted in a skull fracture, brain swelling and internal bleeding.

Chili Cookoff

Central Lake Ice Fishing Tournament

Central Lake’s Annual Ice Fishing Tournament in the Upper Chain of Lakes is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17. Fish measuring will take place from 2-3 p.m. (must be in line by 3 p.m.). King of the Ice Awards, door prizes and a 50/50 raffle will begin at 3:15 p.m.
Registration begins at Thurston Park Pavilion from 6:30-7 a.m. or pre-register at Lakeside Corner Store, NuStar Insurance or Central Lake Tavern (all located in Central Lake) or Bellaire Bait and Tackle in Bellaire.

Family Fun Ski at GRNA

The final Free Family Fun Ski day will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Grass River Natural Area. All are invited to enjoy a warm fire, hot cocoa and free cross-country skiing on the GRNA’s tracked trails. Rental equipment is available by donation at the center and families can sign up for an instructor to guide them through the trails. Snowmobile Drag Racing

Snowmobile Drag Racing will take place Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Mancelona Motorplex. Registration is scheduled from 9-11 a.m., with racing starting at noon. The property is located just east of US-131 and is accessible from Valley Road.

Valentine’s Dinner

A Valentine’s dinner, “Cooking with Paul,” will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at the COA Center, 308 E. Cayuga St. in Bellaire. The menu will feature: a salad bar, sliced ham with pineapple, scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls and a special dessert. Music will be provided by Rob and Debbie Younce. A suggested donation is $3 for those ages 60-plus or $6 for those under 60.
