ALATEEN meetings in Kalkaska

ALATEEN is now holding meetings at 8 p.m. every Tuesday at the Kalkaska Senior Center, 303 Coral St. ALATEEN is a support group for those ages 12-18 whose lives have been affected by the alcohol or substance abuse of a loved one. There are three separate meetings held at the same time: AL-ANON, ALATEEN and AA. All are welcome to attend the meeting of their choice.

Bottle and Can Drive

Students at Alba Elementary School are currently holding a bottle/can drive to earn money toward the purchase of a wooden boat for the playground. Bottles and cans can be dropped off at Alba School (in front by the office) or by contacting Becky Beagle anytime at 231-290-3334 for pick up. Please leave a message and she will return your call. The collection is continuing through March.

Schuss Mountain Snow Challenge

Fast becoming one of Michigan’s biggest winter events, the Schuss Mountain Snow Challenge transforms the late season slopes into side-by-side uphill truck racing. Watch as modified trucks, jeeps and more steps on the gas and race to the top. A portion of proceeds from the event is donated to Michigan’s Disabled American Veterans. Note: No coolers, outside beverages or dogs allowed.

Michigan Maple Syrup Day

Learn about what goes on at a Michigan maple sugar bush, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Southwell Sugar Shack in Mancelona. Weather pending, the trees will be tapped and the sap flowing; see how syrup it is harvested and made into the great tasting syrup. The event is free and takes place rain or shine. Attendees should come prepared with proper attire and footwear for the occasion.

Spring Break at the ER Library

The Elk Rapids District Library is hosting “Spring Break @ the Library,” a series of afternoon programs for kids, March 27-30, beginning at 1 p.m. each day. NASA STEM & Lego Challenge on March 27 will encourage kids to learn how eclipses work and introduce them to the moons of the solar system. Kids can make a “UV kid” for their backpack and create a lunar landscape with Legos. Sherman the Reading Dog will visit on March 28, and the library’s meeting room will become a cozy reading nook where attendees can read and create a craft with a “gentle giant” Bernese Mountain dog.

Movie Night to celebrate ‘Wizard of Oz’

The Friends of the Bellaire Library will host movie night at the library on Tuesday, March 26, beginning at 6:30 p.m. All are invited to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the “Wizard of Oz,” one of the best-loved movies of all time. Prizes will be awarded to those who dress up as their favorite Oz character! “Wickedly good” treats will be available, too. For those interested in dinner prior to the movie, meet at Short’s Brewing at 5 p.m. The movie and treats are free, and all are welcome to attend.

Good Sam to host benefit spaghetti dinner

Good Samaritan Family Services is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner on Monday, March 25 from 5-7 p.m. at the Ellsworth Elementary School. Proceeds from the event will go toward Good Sam’s emergency assistance fund. The need for helping with propane has almost passed. Soon the agency will be hearing from people who need help avoiding electricity shut-offs.

Early Spring Bird Walk

Join Grass River Natural Area staff and volunteers at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 23 for the first bird walk of the seasonal series to look and listen for the first birds of spring. The group will also learn how to use eBird to record its findings. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars or borrow some from the GRNA. Cost for the two-hour program is $5 per person. Pastie Pick Up

All are encouraged to place an order for pasties now for pick-up between noon and 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 21-22. The pasties are being prepared by the Central Lake United Methodist Church. Cost is $6 with gravy. To place an order, call 231-544-6084 or text 231-676-2989. Miss Kalkaska Pageant

This year’s Miss Kalkaska Pageant will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 16 in the Kalkaska High School Auditorium. A total of 31 contestants will vie for the titles of Tiny Tot, Little Miss, Pre-Teen, Teen and Miss Kalkaska. Tickets will be available at the door.

‘Spring Pastels and More’

To welcome a new season the Grass River Natural Area will host “Spring Pastels and More” at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16. Participants will take a short walk looking for signs of spring’s awakening. Afterwards, the group will use pastels and a variety of other media to illustrate what they have uncovered. Cost for the two-hour program is $8 per person, and all supplies are provided. St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser Dinner

The Antrim County Commission on Aging will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser Dinner on Friday, March 15 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per person or $5 for those ages 10 and younger. MPS to present ‘The Magical Land of Oz’

Mancelona Public Schools will present, “The Magical Land of Oz,” at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 at Mancelona Elementary School. The musical will feature students from all three buildings including the high school art department, high school robotics team, and the Mancelona drama program.  The event is being made possible through minigrants from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, Michigan Youth Arts, and support from the Mancelona Education Foundation and Communities In Schools of Northwest Michigan.

Al-Anon Meeting

Al-Anon meets at noon every Tuesday at the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church, 105 Bridge St. in the upstairs library (use the side door). The group’s Tuesday meetings are now held year-round. This is a support group for family and friends whose lives are affected by the alcohol or substance abuse of loved ones.
