The Bellaire Public Library is inviting families to sign up for the Family Literacy Program which will include monthly packets with free books, reading activities and some fun ideas to help children with their reading skills. Registered families will also be able to join the library at monthly family literacy nights beginning on Tuesday, March 8 (second Tuesday of each month until May). These events will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Master Gardener Association Meeting

The Master Gardener Association Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m, via Zoom. Nancy Popa, an advanced master gardener, Leelanau Conservancy Board member and a board member of the Lake Leelanau Associaton will speak on the natural shoreline to help filter pollutants, and protect against erosion and provide habitat for fish and other forms of wildlife.

Miss Bellaire Scholarship Program

This Miss Bellaire Scholarship Program will be crowing the 2022 Miss Bellaire and her court on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 6  p.m. at the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church. Come and say goodbye to the 2021 ladies and welcome the 2022 ladies. Reception will be in the fellowship hall after the crowning.

First Annual Ice Games

The Bellaire Rotary Club will be hosting its first annual Ice Games at the new ice rink next to the Blue Pelican and Side Door Saloon in Central Lake on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the Ice Fishing Tournament. Prizes will be awarded for the best catch costume. Warm with hot chocolate.

Winterfest

The Grass River Natural Area will be hosting its Winterfest on Saturday, Feb. 12 from noon to 3 p.m. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing demonstrations will take place along with making crafts, nature stories and kid’s snow art. The outdoor pavilion will be open with a warm fire, s’mores and cups of hot chocolate. Mask must be worn indoors.

Craftnoon at the Library

Craftnoons for adults ages 16 and older are scheduled on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Bellaire Public Library at 4 p.m. Craft instruction on various projects (materials included). Registration is required by calling the library at 231-533-8814.

Upper Chain Ice Fishing Tournament

The Central Lake Upper Chain Ice Fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19. Entry fee is $10 per person. Pre-registration will be at the following locations: Lakeside Corner Store, NuStar Insurance, Central Lake Tavern, Central Lake Lumber, all located in Central Lake; Captain’s Choice Marine, Bellaire Bait and Tackle in Bellaire. Day of registration is from 6:30-7 a.m. at Thurston Park Pavilion. Lines drop at 7 a.m.

Elk Rapids High School Play

Lantern-Lit Ski and Snowshoe

Join Grass River Natural Area for lantern lit ski and snowshoe tour on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 6-9 p.m. Lantern light reflecting off freshly fallen snow is a great way to enjoy the forest in winter. Enjoy an evening of skiing on Grass River Natural Area’s groom ski trails or snowshoe the boardwalk on the river. There will be a warm campfire at the center pavilion and the heated building will be open and staffed.
