John Dennis Thorne

John Dennis Thorne Jr., 42, of Kalkaska, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Sept. 8, 1984, in Traverse City to John and Nancy (Page) Thorne Sr.

John grew up in Kalkaska and attended Cherry Knoll and Eastern schools in Traverse City. During those years, he met his speech teacher, Mr. Anderson, who became a dear friend throughout his life. John later attended Kalkaska schools for five years, where he was fortunate to have two wonderful aides, Vanessa Guy, who worked with him for four years, and Diane Garchow, who assisted him in eighth grade. He continued his education through TBA before beginning his working years at Glen’s Market, where he was employed for 18 years.

From a young age, John had a heart for helping others. When he was just 10 years old, he organized a bake sale to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Jerry’s Kids, collecting his first $50. What began as a small act of kindness grew into years of fundraising. John proudly collected the money he raised in a fishbowl, eventually reaching an incredible $5,000. His generosity and desire to make a difference were a reflection of the person he was.

John’s faith was at the center of his life. He loved attending Church Alive Church of God, talking about Jesus, singing, and sharing God’s Word with anyone willing to listen. On Sunday afternoons, he especially enjoyed preaching the Word to those who were unable to attend church services. In 2023, John received a scooter, which brought him great joy. During the summer months, he could often be found riding it in the evenings, making his way around the local schools and offering a prayer over each one as he passed. John was also a devoted Michigan Wolverines fan who looked forward to football season every fall. His enthusiastic “Go Blue!” was a familiar greeting to his many friends at the Eden Center.

John loved joking and teasing those around him, and his friends were always happy to give it right back. Over the years, the friendships he formed there grew into something truly special, and the people at Eden Center became his second family. He also loved playing bingo and spending time surrounded by those who cared about him. Above all, John treasured his family. He shared an especially close bond with his sister, Amy, whom he lovingly referred to as “My Amy.” Anyone who knew John likely knew just how much she meant to him. She held a special place in his heart, as did his nephews, Christian and Nicholas, of whom he was incredibly proud. His love for his family was unwavering, and they meant the world to him.

John is survived by his mother, Nancy Thorne; his sister, Amy (Eric) Marshall; and his nephews, Christian and Nicholas Marshall. He was preceded in death by his father, John Thorne Sr. and his grandparents. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and the Eden Center staff for their amazing care throughout the years. A visitation was held at Kalkaska Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, from 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The funeral service was held on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, at Heritage Vineyard Church at 2 p.m. with a final visitation one hour prior to the service from 1–2 p.m. Burial followed the service at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Kalkaska Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
