The Village of Kalkaska will roll out the holiday carpet on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2 for Christmas in Kalkaska. This year’s festivities will kick off with a Holiday Light Tour on Thursday, followed by a lighted parade through downtown on Friday. Breakfast with Santa, a Holiday Craft Show and Christmas Concert, plus much more are scheduled for Saturday.

Good Samaritan Family Services is dedicating the new men’s ministry facility, His House, at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1. All are welcome. Following the dedication there will be refreshments and tours of the new facility.

The Friends of the Kalkaska Library are planning Christmas at the library. In addition to holiday décor throughout the building, there will be numerous silent auction baskets on display. Silent auction bids will be accepted from Sunday, Nov. 26 through Thursday, Dec. 21. All money raised from the auction will go toward the New Library Building Fund. The Friends will also have its annual cookie sale Dec. 14-15. The village of Alden will host its Old-Fashion Christmas Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 25 beginning at 5 p.m. The festivities will start at the Posey Patch; Santa will then lead everyone to The Depot for more fun. The event – sponsored by the Alden Historical Society and Downtown Alden Business Association – will include refreshments, tree lighting, caroling, and treats for the kids, along an opportunity to visit with Santa.

Following a growing nationwide campaign, the Saturday after Thanksgiving has been designated as “Shop Local” (or Small Business) Saturday. As a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the event encourages residents to patronize smaller brick and mortar businesses in their own neighborhoods. The Torch Area Artisans Guild (TAAG) will hold its Annual Holiday Arts and Craft Show on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alden Community Center, 8751 Helena Road in Alden. There will be a large variety of vendors on hand for the event. Door prizes, a bake sale and lunch are available. Admission is free.
The Meadow Brook Resident Council will hold its Annual Holiday Sale, “Browse the Bazaar” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 in Meguzee Hall. According to organizers, the event offers affordable gift-giving ideas from area artisans. A raffle, bake sale and lunch counter will also be offered throughout the day. All profits from the event and raffle (for a new 43-inch flat screen TV) will benefit the Resident Council.
