Free Hunter Safety Class

Saturday, September 8, 2018 - 8:00am to Sunday, September 9, 2018 - 5:00pm

A free Michigan DNR-Certified Hunter Safety Class will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8-9 at the Central Lake VFW Hall (1805 N. M-88, just south of downtown). Hours on Saturday are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Sunday hours will vary slightly. Both days are required for students to receive their certificates. Students ages 10 and younger will need a parent to attend the class with them. The class is free, but limited to 90 students. Lunch will be supplied both days for all students.

Barbara Roberts Memorial Bridge Walk

All are invited to join the Friends of the Bellaire Library at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3 as they walk the three bridges in Bellaire to promote children’s literacy programs at the library. The group will meet at the gazebo in Richardi Park to begin the walk. Refreshments will be provided following the walk. Donations are gratefully accepted. The Friends provide needed funds to buy books for the Baby Pantry and the library’s summer reading program. Please bring a friend, human or furry. Arts and Crafts Show

The Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce will host its final Arts and Crafts show of the summer on Saturday, Sept. 1. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. downtown along River Street. More than 70 vendors from throughout the region and beyond will be on hand to display their handmade wares.

Join the Grass River Natural Area each Friday at 10 a.m. to enjoy a short, nature-themed children’s story. The group will then take the children on an adventure with an activity or a hike on the trails at Grass River. Alden - Evening Stroll and Farmers Market

The Village of Alden will continue its regular Evening Stroll on Thursday, Aug. 30. The events are held from 6-8 p.m. every Thursday throughout the summer in downtown Alden. The weekly festivities include live music, entertainment, kids’ activities, evening shopping and a farmers market from 4-7 p.m. (at Tennis Court Park).

‘Yoga in the Outdoors’

Join the Grass River Natural area at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22 for a rejuvenating hour of outdoor yoga. This is a rain or shine event, stretching out at the dock if it is shining and under the pavilion if it is raining. Friends of the Kalkaska Library golf outing

The Friends of the Kalkaska Library will host its 4th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, Aug. 20 to raise funds for the new library building. The event will include an 18-hole scramble at Grandview Golf Course with registration beginning at 8 a.m. A Continental breakfast and lunch are included. Society to host local author

The Elk Rapids Area Historical Society will present a “bonus program” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 at the Elk Rapids History Museum, 301 Traverse St. Author Norm Veliquette will discuss his recent book, “45 in the PITS! – A Half Century In Processing Cherries.” Corky Crimmins will moderate. Selected passages will highlight ups and downs of Veliquette’s life and the cherry industry. Kiwanis Family Picnic

The Kalkaska Kiwanis Club will host its 31st Annual Family Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 12. All are invited to enjoy steak, fresh corn on the cob, salad, rolls, drinks and dessert from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Railroad Square, downtown Kalkaska. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 for children ages 10 and younger. Tickets will be available from Kiwanians before the picnic and at the door. Proceeds from the picnic will be used for Kalkaska area community projects.
