Torch Lake Camps Display Extended Through Sept. 29

The Torch Lake Camps historical display at the Alden District Library has been extended through Sept. 29. The free exhibit, which opened in August, features materials from the Alden Depot Museum and can be viewed during regular library hours: 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday; and 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The library is located in the Helena Township Community Center, 8751 Helena Road in Alden. For information, call 231-331-4318.

 

September StoryWalk Features ‘How Chipmunk Got His Stripes’

Families can visit Coy Mountain, 9011 Valley St. in Alden, Sept. 1-29 for the monthly StoryWalk®, featuring “How Chipmunk Got His Stripes” by Joseph Bruchac and James Bruchac. The story covers about a half-mile portion of the trail, allowing visitors to read while enjoying a walk through the woods. Coy Mountain is open daily from dawn to dusk. The program is sponsored by the Alden District Library.

 

Friends of Alden District Library to Meet

The Friends of Alden District Library will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Helena Township Community Center, 8751 Helena Road in Alden. Social time begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the regular meeting at 10 a.m. Discussion will include upcoming programs and activities as well as volunteer opportunities. Green Elk Rapids to Host Free ‘Extraordinary Caterpillar’ Screening

Green Elk Rapids will host a free screening of “The Extraordinary Caterpillar” at 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Elk Rapids Cinema Theater. The 60-minute documentary explores the important role caterpillars play in maintaining healthy ecosystems, using 4K cinematography and close-up footage captured in meadows, city parks and backyard gardens. Designed for viewers of all ages, the film also offers practical ways families can support local wildlife in their communities. Admission is free. The screening is sponsored by the Grand Traverse Butterfly Zoo, Short’s Brewery, and Cellar 152.

Program to Explore Efforts to Keep Torch Lake Blue

Joseph of the Torch Lake Protection Alliance will present a summary of the Keep Torch Lake Blue Project at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Helena Township Community Center, 8751 Helena Road in Alden. The project, launched in 2022 following concerns about persistent benthic algae, is studying Torch Lake water quality through work with the U.S. Geological Survey. Findings are expected to have implications for the greater Chain of Lakes, with the USGS final report expected in late 2026 or early 2027. The program is free and sponsored by the Alden District Library.

Story Time With Miss Lona Features Squirrel Theme

Alden Sidewalk Sales, Art and Craft Show Set for September

Downtown Alden will host its annual Sidewalk Sales from Friday, Sept. 4, through Sunday, Sept. 6, offering visitors an opportunity to shop in the downtown area. The weekend will also feature an Art & Craft Show from Saturday, Sept. 5, through Monday, Sept. 7, at Depot Park. The events are presented by the Downtown Alden Business Association. History Hounds Program at Bellaire Public Library

History Hounds is a monthly program hosted by the Bellaire Area Historical Society at the Bellaire Public Library. A program focused on an aspect of Michigan history will be presented on the Bellaire Public Library’s big screen the first Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. There will be refreshments and time for discussion afterwards.
