Bellaire Historical Society Writing Workshop at the Bellaire Public Library

The Bellaire Area Historical Society hosts a monthly writing workshop from noon to 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Bellaire Public Library, 111 S. Bridge St. The workshop is designed for anyone interested in writing and preserving family stories or Bellaire history. All experience levels are welcome. Stargardt Family Jazz Concert

Three generations of the Stargardt family will return to Church in the Hills (6401 Shanty Creek Rd.) for a concert Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m.  They will be playing both standards and classical adaptations. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 for adults.  Come enjoy some great music in a beautiful venue!

 

Plein Air Painting

The Jordan River Arts Council (JRAC) is hosting a Plein Air painting meetup on Tuesday, Aug. 18. All media and experience levels are welcome. No instruction will be given—just camaraderie and encouragement! Please bring your own painting supplies. Meet 1-3 p.m. at Sunset Park, 101 East Lake St., Petoskey. Tyler Gitchel Band Closes Concert Series

The Mancelona Chamber of Commerce will wrap up its Summer Celebration Outdoor Music Concert series with a performance by the Tyler Gitchel Band on Tuesday, Aug. 18. The free concert begins at 7 p.m. in downtown Mancelona. Everyone is welcome to attend.

 

Bellaire Public Library Nature Rangers

The Bellaire Public Library will host Nature Rangers, a free program for children, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17. Train Show and Swap Meet

The Alden Depot Museum will host its annual Train Show and Swap Meet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15-16 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 22-23 and Aug. 29-30. The free event will feature operating model trains of all gauges, railroad memorabilia and exhibits highlighting the history of railroads in Michigan and Antrim County. A swap meet will offer opportunities to buy and sell model trains and accessories, and organizers will be available to provide information on train repairs and values.

Hunter Safety Field Day

The Chain O’Lakes Youth Shooting Organization will host a Hunter Safety Field Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Chain O’Lakes Sportsman’s Club, 840 Peterson Road in Mancelona. The free field day is open to students who have completed the required online hunter safety education course, which has a $29.95 DNR fee. Participants should bring eye and ear protection, sunscreen and a parent or guardian, as minors must be accompanied by an adult. Organizers said all firearms, ammunition and other equipment will be provided, and grilled lunch will be served.

Bellaire Public Library Annual Book Sale

The Friends of the Bellaire Public Library will hold their annual book sale during the Rubber Ducky Festival on Friday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The sale features gently used books donated by the community, with proceeds benefiting library programs and new additions to the collection. Summer Silhouettes

Create striking works of art during Summer Silhouettes on Thursday, Aug. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Grass River Natural Area. Participants will use watercolors and mixed media to paint glowing summer skies accented with dramatic silhouettes in this workshop designed for artists of all skill levels. Sketchbook Group

The Jordan River Arts Council Sketchbook Group is a casual meet-up for artists with an interest in sketching, exploring various media, trying new techniques and sharing tips and tricks. Classic Sports Car Show

The 27th annual Alden Classic Sports Car Show will be held Sunday, Aug. 9, at Alden Village Park. Registration will be available from 9 a.m. to noon, with the show open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, hosted by the Twin Bay British Car Club, will feature classic sports cars, trophies, valve cover racing and door prizes.
