History of the Bellaire Public Library

Anyone driving along Bridge Street in Bellaire early in the afternoon of February 2, 1989, would have been greeted with an unusual sight. Scores of school children, bundled up against the winter cold, were arranged in a single file line along the street stretching from the corner of Broad Street, all the way to a new building on South Bridge Street. They were passing bags of books along the line, and their destination was the brand-new Bellaire Public Library. This joyous relay was the culmination of years of work by many individuals who were committed to having a vibrant, active library as part of their community. What follows is a brief history of how that day came to pass.
